Champions League Review (Week 2)

GROUP A

Shakhtar Donetsk Vs. Manchester United

Half Time Score: 1-0 (18' Welbeck)
Full Time Score: 1-1(76' Taison)

Review:

Manchester United took the early lead through Danny Welbeck as Shakhtar failed to clear a Felaini pass effectively. Shakhtar attacked well after that and had a few shots on goal but none of consequence. All in all it was a well matched contest but and Taison equalised for Shakhtar as the sides shared a point each.

Bayer Leverkusen Vs. Real Sociedad

Half Time Score: 1-0 (45' Rolfes)
Full Time Score: 0-2 (51' Vela, 90' Hegeler)

 Review:

In the first half, Antoine Griezmann's goal was ruled offside though he seemed pretty much onside. A set piece was eventually pushed into the net by Simon Rolfes. In the second half Carlos Vela was hacked down in the box and even though he missed the resulting penalty, he slotted home the on the rebound to equalize. The highlight of the game was the free kick by Jens Hegeler right at the end of the match that gave Leverkusen the lead.

GROUP B

Real Madrid Vs. FC Copenhagen

Half Time Score: 1-0 (21' Ronaldo)
Full Time Score: 4-0 (65' Ronaldo, 71',90' Di Maria)

                                                                                    Review:

Real Madrid bossed around the danish club and had an easy win. The scoring was opened by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo off a Vieira Marcelo cross. The second too, was scored by Ronaldo from a neat lob by Angel Di Maria. The last 2 goals were both scored by the Argentine as he bagged a brace too. The first of his goal he curled in from the edge of the box and his second from further in. An assist to go along with his two goals, meant Angel Di Maria clinched the man of the match.

Juventus Vs. Galatasaray

Half Time Score: 0-1 (36' Drogba)
Full Time Score: 2-2 (78' Vidal (pen), 87' Quaglirella, 88' Bulut)

                                                                                    Review:

Shambolic defending lead to the first goal of the game as Didier Drogba had an open net to aim at. Juventus pushed for the rest of the game, and eventually got their chance when Fabio Quagliarella was hacked down in the penalty area. Arturo Vidal converted calmly. It was the Italian Quagliarella who scored the second very late in the game from a Pirlo cross. Although, the party planning was foiled when Drogba's header fell to Umut Bulut in the box and he netted home for a 2 all draw.

GROUP C

Paris Saint Germain Vs. SL Benfica

Half Time Score: 3-0 (5',30' Ibrahimovic, 25' Marquinhos)
Full Time Score: 3-0

Review:

Three early goals for Paris Saint Germain sealed the deal for them. The first goal was scored by captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It was a simple tap in for him. The second goal was created through brilliant passing that eventually fell to Marquinhos who simlpy had to put his foot in to guide the ball into an empty net. Ibrahimovic scored the third from a set piece to extend PSG's lead.

Anderlecht Vs. Olympiacos

Half Time Score: 0-1(17' Mitroglou)
Full Time Score: 0-3(56',72' Mitroglou)

Review:

A Mitroglou hattrick gave Olympiacos a win over Anderlecht. It was Anderlecht with all the possession and chances but failed to capitalize and even missed a penalty. But Olympiacos on the other hand  made full use of their limited opportunities and snatched 3 points by playing off the counter. They counter attacked with speed and precision, way too quick for the Benfica defence to handle.

CSKA Moscow Vs. Viktoria Plzen

Half Time Score: 2-0 (4' Rajtoral, 19' Tosic, 29' Honda)
Full Time Score: 3-0 (78' Reznik (og), 90' Bakos)

                                                                                    Review:

A comical game characterised by comical defending and goalkeeping saw the visitors take an early lead on 4 minutes when a shot deflected off the CSKA defender and into the path of Frantisek Rajtoral who slipped it into an open net. Tosic equalised for CSKA and a dink from Keisuke Honda gave them the lead. An own goal by the keeper gave CSKA a further lead. A stoppage time goal came a bit too late for Plzen to build on.

Highlights of the game here,

Manchester City Vs. Bayern Munich

Half Time Score: 0-1 (7' Ribery)
Full Time Score: 1-3 (56' Muller, 59' Robben, 79' Negredo)

                                                                                    Review:

Bayern dominated the first half with posession but had only a goal to show for it. Ribery scored from distance as Joe Hart failed to keep the ball out of the net. The second half started well for Manchester City but Bayern struck twice on the counter as Thomas Muller dribbled and Arjen Robben shot near post, past Joe Hart. Alvaro Negredo pulled one back for City but it merely proved to be a consolation for them.

GROUP E

Basel Vs. Schalke 04

Half Time Score: 0-0
Full Time Score: 0-1 (54' Draxler)

Review:

It was an evenly matched contest as both sides troubled each other. Kevin Prince Boateng was unable to make weak defending by Basel count for Schalke. It wasnt until the second half that Roman Neustadter hit a volley from 20 yards out that shuddered the crossbar. It was Julian Draxler who finally scored for Schalke with a brilliant hit from the same position as Neustadter.

Steaua Bucuresti Vs.Chelsea

Half Time Score: 2-0 (19' Ramires, 44' Georgievski (og))
Full Time Score: 4-0 (55' Ramires, 90' Lampard)

Review:

It was Ramires who gave Chelsea the lead in Romania as he poked the ball into the net after a brilliant piece of work from Andre Schurrle down the wing. The second goal for Chelsea came right before the end of the half as Eto'o shot was run into his own net by Daniel Georgievski. Ramires smashed home a third and Frank Lampard's 90th minute strike meant Chelsea put 4 past Steaua and secured 3 points for themselves.

Arsenal Vs. SSC Napoli

Half Time Score: 2-0 (8' Ozil, 15' Giroud)
Full Time Score: 2-0

                                                                                    Review:

Termed as the first real test of the season for Arsenal, they began really bright. Napoli failed to maintain any possession as the 5 midfielders that started for Arsenal kept knocking the ball around. It was Ozil who scored the first goal with a brilliant finish from the edge of the box from a Ramsey cross. Ozil also set up the second for Olivier Giroud who couldn't miss from 6 yards out. In the second half Napoli saw a bit more posession but were unable to threaten the Arsenal goal.

Borussia Dortmund Vs. Olympique De Marseille

Half Time Score: 1-0 (19' Lewandowski)
Full Time Score: 3-0 (52' Reus, 80' Lewandowski (pen))

                                                                                    Review:

Dortmund created a lot of chances throughout the game and as expected, Marseille (considered to be the weakest in the group) struggled. It was a counter with blindning speed that lead to the first goal as Erik Durm played in a pass to Lewandowski who pushed it into the net. The second goal came in the second half through Marco Reus. Ten minutes before time, Reus was brought down in the box giving Dortmund a penalty that Lewandowski dispatched with ease.

FC Porto Vs. Atletico Madrid

Half Time Score: 1-0 (16' Jackson)
Full Time Score: 1-2 (58' Godin, 86' Arda)

Review:

Jackson Martinez took the lead for FC Porto as he headed home a low cross from a free kick. Atletico began their fightback when Uruguay defender Diego Godin headed home from a set piece and a smartly worked free kick much similar like the one used by Argentina against England in the 90's, gave Atletico the winner very late in the match as Arda Turan found himself unmarked in the box to smash home.

Zenit St. Petersburg Vs. Austria Wien

Half Time Score: 0-0
Full Time Score: 0-0 (58' Hulk, 64' Arda, 80' Leo)

Review:

Wien travelled to Russia following a bad run of form. It was the home side that threatened as expected but were unable to score. their cause was not helped by the sending off of Belgian midfielder Alex Witsel for a seemingly good challenge. The game ended a draw as Zenit squandered their golden opportunity to get 3 points on deck against the weakest side in the group.

Celtic Vs. FC Barcelona

Half Time Score: 0-0
Full Time Score: 0-1 (76' Fabregas)

                                                                                    Review:

Strong organised defending from Celtic meant Barcelona were unable to grab a goal in the first half even through the brilliance of Neymar and Andres Iniesta. Defender Scott Brown was sent off when Neymar went down pretty easily. It was Cesc Fabregas who gave Barcelona the lead with a brilliant header into the far post as the ball hit the inside of the net.

Ajax Amsterdam Vs. AC Milan

Half Time Score: 0-0

Full Time Score: 1-1 (90' Denswil, 90' Balotelli)

                                                                                    Review:

There was late drama in Amasterdam as both teams shared spoils. It was Stefano Denswil who headed past the keeper at the brink of full time. It seemed Ajax would win, but a dramatic fall from Mario Balotelli 4 minutes into extra time gave the Italian Giants a penalty which was dispatched by the man who won the penalty itself.

Player Focus: Kevin Strootman - A Midfield Enforcer

Add caption It would not be wrong to say that the fate and the key to success of any team is often decided by its midfield. A midfielder performs the most pivotal task of linking the defence and the attack of his team. We often easily recognize the scintillating skill of wingers, playmakers and deadly goal machines but one must not forget to appreciate the most complex job performed by midfielders. A great midfielder is probably the biggest asset for any team and one player in modern football who certainly looks destined to greatness by mastering this supreme role is Kevin Strootman. Kevin Strootman began his professional footballing career with the Netherlands’ oldest professional football club, Sparta Rotterdam, as a genuine box-to-box midfielder and has continued to develop on this trait. The energetic Dutchman is one of the most effective players in world football when it comes to the art of tackling, winning possession and intercepting the passes. In 2012-13 Europa Leagu

Arsene : On his own terms.

‘His performance levels consistently for 20 years have been unbelievable. And you’d have to say, I do go along the line of, “Be careful what you wish for”                 It seems nigh on incredible to me that the most outspoken, forthright defence of Arsene Wenger, has come from possibly a man who played much of his football engaged in a bitter, rancorous duel with Wenger's creation : modern-day Arsenal.              Gary Neville was frequently described, bluntly, as being a player rather short on talent in his formative years, a fact that he too recognized. His response to this was singleminded and determined : graft. Years of effort that dovetailed in a glittering career, trophy-laden at Old Trafford with his boyhood club Manchester United. As such, a decade after the Invincibles took away the collective breath of every fan fortunate enough to watch English football, these very characteristics espoused by Neville seem to

Manuel Pellegrini; Tactical Genius

Manuel Pellegrini took over from Roberto Mancini only a season after the Italian managed to win the Premier League title ahead of local rivals Manchester United. An unsuccessful 2012-13 season saw the blue side of Manchester lose their title to Sir Alex Fergusson, knocked out from the Champions League group stages and also lose the FA cup final to Roberto Martinez’s Wigan Athletic owing to a late Ben Watson header. It seemed the investment put into the club and the return was not something the owners appreciated and it seemed inevitable that Mancini would make way. Manuel Pellegrini played his entire career at Chilean side Universidad De Chile. He retired early at the age of 33 as he believed his skill at Civil Engineering would be essential in rebuilding after the earthquakes that had just taken place.  After managerial stints in Chile and Argentina, Pellegrini was recruited by the yellow submarine. He led them to their record 3rd and 2nd place finishes in the

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro : He Who Must Be Named.

His time has come. "I don’t want to talk about the Golden Ball, I just do what I do out on the pitch; the decision is not up to me." -Cristiano Ronaldo The FIFA Ballon d’Or award has become a tad monotonous over the last 5 years or so, as it has effectively been reduced to a personal tussle between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The last 4 years have seen Messi clinch the trophy with Ronaldo just falling short.   Mere statistics will tell us that Ronaldo has conjured majestic performances in these last four years, deserving to be called the Best in the world but it pales in comparison to Messi’s out-of-the-world performances combined with the continued success of the footballing juggernaut called FC Barcelona. Fans of the former Manchester United winger have become so disgruntled with this trend that rumours of a conspiracy against Ronaldo have often been propagated. Two Of A Kind 2013 has provided us with a sudden shift in the balance of power. Me

From MAZACAR to WIZACAR

Remember the season of 2011-12 when Chelsea FC won the UEFA Champions League? Many impeached Chelsea’s defensive strategy. They accused Chelsea of ‘Parking the Bus’. What Chelsea exactly did was they occupied almost all defensive space by letting the opposition have possession and then countered as fast as possible without committing too many men forward. Some may call it ‘Parking the Bus’ but it worked unlike AC Milan who failed miserably. The Scenario changed when Chelsea signed Oscar from Internacional and Eden Hazard from Lille. These signings brought a drastic change in Chelsea’s playing style under Roberto Di Matteo. Chelsea’s attitude changed from defensive to attacking. The mid-field trio MAta-haZAard-osCAR had been life saving substantially after Drogba’s exit and signing of Torres being a flop. They provided young and fresh legs with quality play making resulting into an influential mid-field partnership. Chelsea scored 147 goals, their best ever in 2012-13.
