Champions League Review (Week 1)

GROUP A

Manchester United Vs. Bayer Leverkusen

Half Time Score: 1-0 (22' Rooney)
Full Time Score: 4-2(54' Rolfes, 59' Van Persie, 70' Rooney, 79' Valencia)

Review:

It was an evenly matched first half even though Manchester United took the lead through Wayne Rooney in the 22' from Evra's cross. Bayer began playing a high pressure game the 2nd half and equalised through Simon Rolfes (54'). 5 minutes later Van Persie restored the lead and at this point the game pretty much got away from Leverkusen as United put the game to bed with two more goals through Rooney and Valencia. The game ended 4 - 2. 3 points to United.

Real Sociedad Vs. Shakhtar Donetsk

Half Time Score: 0-0
Full Time Score: 0-2(65',87' Alex Teixeira)

 Review:

The home side started pretty well with every opportunity and attempt at goal falling to their feet. It took Shakhtar right up to half time to register their first attempt at goal. The second half seemed more evenly matched, though it was Shakhtar who took the lead and doubled it through Alex Teixeira.

Galatasaray Vs. Real Madrid

Half Time Score: 0-1 (33' Isco)
Full Time Score: 1-6 (54',84' Benzema, 63',66',90' Ronaldo, 84' Bulut)

                                                                                    Review:

The goal by Isco Alarcon a bit later in the 1st half all but nullified any threats Galatasaray showed when the game began. The second half was something Galatasaray would love to forget about because it was shambolic for them. 2 goals from Benzema and a hattrick for Cristiano Ronaldo buried the poor home team's defence. Gareth Bale made his champions league debut for Real from the bench and this was his first game in the champions leauge since his last against his current employers.

FC Copenhagen Vs. Juventus

Half Time Score: 1-0 (14' Jorgensen)
Full Time Score: 1-1 (54' Quaglirella)

                                                                                    Review:

It was one of the more unexpected results of the week. Juventus were stunned by an early Copenhagen goal but immediately went on the offensive but it was just one of those days for the Copenhagen keeper Johan Wiland where he would keep just everything out. The sustained Juventus pressure finally gave fruit in the second half when Quaglirella equalised from an Peluso cross. The game ended 1-1 despite the continuous pressure and both sides shared a point.

SL Benfica Vs. RSC Anderlecht

Half Time Score: 2-0 (4' Djuricic, 30' Luisao)
Full Time Score: 2-0

Review:

The game began really well for the home side as Filip Djuricic poked in a ball the keeper Silvio Proto couldnt hold on too. Luisao Anderson doubled the lead a later in the half with a decent control and finish. The best attacking period for Anderlecht was immediately after the break they were unable to get any goals. the game ended 2-0 in favour of the home team as they secured 3 points.

Olympiacos Vs. Paris Saint Germain

Half Time Score: 1-1(19' Cavani, 24' Weiss)
Full Time Score: 1-4(68',73' Thiago Motta, 86' Marquinios)

Review:

The scoreline does not do justice to the effort put in by Olympiacos but credit goes to PSG for their astute finishing. Olympiacos were very weak while defending setpieces and conceded 3 2nd half goals through it. The first half ended 1-1 as Vladamir Weiss the ex- Manchester City youngster scored an incredible solo goal.

The game began well for Bayern Munich with David Alaba scoring a sublime free kick from around 26 yards out. The game pretty much continued that way as Bayern continued to keep possession and doubled their lead through a Mario Mandzukic header just before the half. Robben scored a third in the second half ensuring 3 points for Bayern.

Three 2nd half goals ensured that City started they campaign off with 3 points in Czech. The highlight of the game was the scorching finish by the big man Yaya Toure to double City's advantage after Edin Dzeko's  opener.

Atsuto Uchida opened the scoring halfway through the second when his cross from midfield crept into the far post. Schalke continued scoring after that through Kevin Prince Boateng. Just before full time, slick passing gave young prodigy Julian Draxler a chance to triple the lead which he took with arms wide open. 3 points to the Germans.

Olympique De Marseille Vs Arsenal

Half Time Score: 0-0
Full Time Score: 1-2 (65' Walcott, 84' Ramsey, 90' J. Ayew)

                                                                                    Review:

A tired and lithargic display from Arsenal in the first half as they misplaced several passes meant Marseille had the upper hand but failed to truly trouble Wojciech Szczesny. A second half blunder from Jeremy Morel gave Theo Walcott the opportunity to thrash the ball into the back of the net and free scoring Aaron Ramsey's goal at the end meant arsenal were safe. Although Marseille pulled one back when Ramsey gave away a penalty, it was too late for them to do anything more.

SSC Napoli Vs Borussia Dortmund

Half Time Score: 1-0 (29' Higuain)
Full Time Score: 2-1 (67' Insigne, 87' Zuniga(og))

                                                                                    Review:

Juan Zuniga's cross was turned into the bottom right corner by Napoli's big money signing of the summer Gonzalo Higuain. Right at the end of the half, Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller was sent off for a hand ball. Napoli's biggest young talent Lorenzo Insigne curled in a beautiful free kick to further Dortmund's frustrations. The third goal too, was scored by a Napoli player, Juan Zuniga who turned the ball into his own net.

Austria Vienna Vs. FC Porto

Review:

Porto enjoyed majority of the possession the entire game though Austria Vienna were able to break out on counter attacks. Porto finally had something to show for all the possession they had, when skipper Lucho Gonzalez wrong footed Heinz Lidner and drove a low shot into the back of the net. The game ended 1-0 to the Portugese visitors as they clinched 3 points from their champions league opener.

Atletico took the first half lead through Miranda five minutes before time. The defender headed home beating Juri Lodigin at the near post. Gilvandinho Hulk equalised with a shot hammered from outside the box. Arda turan restored the lead when a flurry of shots blocked by Zenit kept falling to Atletico players.                                                                                     Review:

Milan were unable to break through the Celtic defence until late in the second half and yet needed an own goal from Emilio Izaguirre to give them the lead. just five minutes later, a great free kick from Balotelli was pushed by Fraser Foster into the path of Sulley Muntari to double Milan's advantage.

FC Barcelona Vs. Ajax Amsterdam

Full Time Score: 4-0 (55',75' Messi, 69' Pique)

                                                                                    Review:

Considering the fact Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant hattrick the previous day, it was pretty obvious what Lionel Messi was going to do. He began scoring with a fantastic free kick that kissed the net on the bottom right corner. He scored 2 more the second half and along with Pique's header, Barcelona ended the game with a 4 goal lead.

Player Focus: Kevin Strootman - A Midfield Enforcer

Add caption It would not be wrong to say that the fate and the key to success of any team is often decided by its midfield. A midfielder performs the most pivotal task of linking the defence and the attack of his team. We often easily recognize the scintillating skill of wingers, playmakers and deadly goal machines but one must not forget to appreciate the most complex job performed by midfielders. A great midfielder is probably the biggest asset for any team and one player in modern football who certainly looks destined to greatness by mastering this supreme role is Kevin Strootman. Kevin Strootman began his professional footballing career with the Netherlands’ oldest professional football club, Sparta Rotterdam, as a genuine box-to-box midfielder and has continued to develop on this trait. The energetic Dutchman is one of the most effective players in world football when it comes to the art of tackling, winning possession and intercepting the passes. In 2012-13 Europa Leagu

And you’d have to say, I do go along the line of, “Be careful what you wish for”                 It seems nigh on incredible to me that the most outspoken, forthright defence of Arsene Wenger, has come from possibly a man who played much of his football engaged in a bitter, rancorous duel with Wenger's creation : modern-day Arsenal.              Gary Neville was frequently described, bluntly, as being a player rather short on talent in his formative years, a fact that he too recognized. His response to this was singleminded and determined : graft. Years of effort that dovetailed in a glittering career, trophy-laden at Old Trafford with his boyhood club Manchester United. As such, a decade after the Invincibles took away the collective breath of every fan fortunate enough to watch English football, these very characteristics espoused by Neville seem to

Manuel Pellegrini; Tactical Genius

Manuel Pellegrini took over from Roberto Mancini only a season after the Italian managed to win the Premier League title ahead of local rivals Manchester United. An unsuccessful 2012-13 season saw the blue side of Manchester lose their title to Sir Alex Fergusson, knocked out from the Champions League group stages and also lose the FA cup final to Roberto Martinez’s Wigan Athletic owing to a late Ben Watson header. It seemed the investment put into the club and the return was not something the owners appreciated and it seemed inevitable that Mancini would make way. Manuel Pellegrini played his entire career at Chilean side Universidad De Chile. He retired early at the age of 33 as he believed his skill at Civil Engineering would be essential in rebuilding after the earthquakes that had just taken place.  After managerial stints in Chile and Argentina, Pellegrini was recruited by the yellow submarine. He led them to their record 3rd and 2nd place finishes in the

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro : He Who Must Be Named.

His time has come. "I don’t want to talk about the Golden Ball, I just do what I do out on the pitch; the decision is not up to me." -Cristiano Ronaldo The FIFA Ballon d’Or award has become a tad monotonous over the last 5 years or so, as it has effectively been reduced to a personal tussle between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The last 4 years have seen Messi clinch the trophy with Ronaldo just falling short.   Mere statistics will tell us that Ronaldo has conjured majestic performances in these last four years, deserving to be called the Best in the world but it pales in comparison to Messi’s out-of-the-world performances combined with the continued success of the footballing juggernaut called FC Barcelona. Fans of the former Manchester United winger have become so disgruntled with this trend that rumours of a conspiracy against Ronaldo have often been propagated. From MAZACAR to WIZACAR

Remember the season of 2011-12 when Chelsea FC won the UEFA Champions League? Many impeached Chelsea’s defensive strategy. They accused Chelsea of ‘Parking the Bus’. What Chelsea exactly did was they occupied almost all defensive space by letting the opposition have possession and then countered as fast as possible without committing too many men forward. Some may call it ‘Parking the Bus’ but it worked unlike AC Milan who failed miserably. The Scenario changed when Chelsea signed Oscar from Internacional and Eden Hazard from Lille. These signings brought a drastic change in Chelsea’s playing style under Roberto Di Matteo. Chelsea’s attitude changed from defensive to attacking. The mid-field trio MAta-haZAard-osCAR had been life saving substantially after Drogba’s exit and signing of Torres being a flop. They provided young and fresh legs with quality play making resulting into an influential mid-field partnership. Chelsea scored 147 goals, their best ever in 2012-13.
